I would not have been delivering this eulogy had it not been for a little two year old girl named Dorothea Aileen Perry, who had the presence of mind to remove the bed linen in which her baby brother, Clarence, had become entangled.

In retrospect, my elder sister Dorothea must have been a gift from God. As I recall, she was conscious of her position as the eldest and acted as the third parent in the family, at times a little too zealously.

“Dorrie”, as she was called by family members attended C. A. Yansen’s Modern High School during the nineteen forties. She was a bright student whose performance led to her exemption from the London Matriculation Examination.

Dorrie chose a career in the British Guiana Civil Service and rose to the rank of Principal Assistant Secretary, her posts including Principal Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Social Development and Culture with responsibility for the Department of Culture; Administrative Manager, National Cultural Center; and Assistant Secretary in the Ministries of Agriculture, Health and Home affairs until her retirement in 1982. Dorothea gained a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences majoring in Political Science from the University of Guyana in 1975.

When my father died in 1950, Dorrie stood shoulder to shoulder with our mother to help to keep a roof over our heads and to put food on the dining table. Whatever the younger Perry siblings have achieved in their lives was made possible by the unselfish devotion of Dorothea Aileen Fredericks throughout her life to the welfare of her mother, her brothers and her younger sister. Dorothea's devoted service to others extended beyond family as she also made significant contributions to the lives of others particularly as a Dorcas Society Mission mentor to young ladies in her church.

It is written in one of Shakespeare’s works; “The evil that men do, lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones”. This must not be so with our elder sister. Each and every one of her younger siblings, and all who have benefitted from her generosity and kindness must forever sing her praises and pray that her humble soul be given eternal peace.

Dorrie we shall miss you. Let us all hope that when the Roll is called up yonder, we will all be there. Au revoir my sister. Au revoir.

Clarence Oswald Perry (Brother)

Dorothea Fredericks was my step mother-in-law. Her late husband, John H.T. Fredericks was my father-in-law.
Aunt Dor, as she was fondly called, was a warm friendly easy going person. We had a cordial relationship and kept in touch over the years.
I will miss her and I extend my sincere condolences to her family. Rest in Peace, Aunt Dor.
